Zwei Monate vor der Wahl wirft Human Rights Watch der Regierung schwere Menschenrechtsverletzungen vor

Warum der Bericht zur Menschenrechtslage in Äthiopien denn nicht in der äthiopischen Hauptstadt Addis Abeba vorgestellt werde, will ein Kollege wissen.

"Irgendetwas sagt mir, dass man mir das wohl nicht erlaubt hätte" , kiekst die Amerikanerin. Kein Wunder: Das Verhältnis zwischen der Afrikadirektorin von Human Rights Watch und der Regierung von Premier Meles Zenawi gilt nicht erst jetzt, zwei Monate vor den Wahlen, als zerrüttet. Ihre Interviews mussten die Menschenrechtler unter strengster Geheimhaltung durchführen. Manche der mehr als 200 Gesprächspartner nahmen eine Tagesreise auf sich, um die Rechercheure in einem sicheren Haus zu treffen. Sechs Monate hielten die Autoren des jüngsten HRW-Reports sich dennoch im Land auf.
